Blindspot is finally stepping up its game in “If Beth”. Since the premiere of season
2, all I’ve had to look forward to was Jane’s tattoos and fights, her hot hunk
of a brother Roman and finding out Sandstorm’s end game. The rest of the story
line had been watered down with mundane activities in the FBI team’s so-called
personal lives.
This episode however reminds me of why I started
watching Blindspot in the first place.
Roman takes Jane to Lake Aurora, Canada in a feat to get her angry and
rededicated to Sandstorm. Apparently, chemical waste from a factory has been
regularly dumped into the lake for years causing the death of hundreds living
in the neighborhood. The government knew about it and rather than get it fixed,
looked the other way. Roman definitely knows how to get his sister’s attention.
Weller meets his ex and future baby mama, Allie (who
attempts to freak out but fails) and tells her that he would like to be a part
of the baby’s life.
While Reade has to deal with the fact that he may or
may not have been part of an abuse (and also house Freddie who was abused),
Patterson figured out one of Jane’s tattoos. It led them to a Homeland Security employee named Bo Kaier
(code name SHDWCAT) who has been using his security access to obtain security
procedures of high government agencies and sell them online as game mods.

The team tracks down
Kaier – thanks to Reed who caught him, broke his face and would have finished him off if Weller hadn't stepped in. Nas speaks to Weller
about Reade’s obvious burst of anger and Weller been his uptight stubborn self
refused to take Reade out of the field. The team also succeeded in recovering
some of his hard disks which Kaier tried to destroy and on it found the
security blueprints of other agencies. Patterson deducts that the AEBLY museum
will be hit next during their fundraising gala so the team decides to put on
their best party face and go undercover at the museum.
They get to the gala
looking dapper with the assumption that there will be a heist but everything
goes sideways when Patterson is strangled with a garrote for like five seconds
by an assailant who hid in a tomb and Jane gets into a sword/fist fight with
the assailant (probably the best 60 seconds of the show). The assailant gets
away and the team retreats to find out the name behind the face.

Turns out the heist was
a hit and the team was able to track the assailant (Elizabeth Gubara) to her
next victim’s home (Charles Kessler). She turned out to be a former undercover
CIA agent who went rogue because she was thrown under the bus by her team when
her cover was blown resulting in the death of her daughter. As it turns out,
her daughter is alive and being cared for by Kessler - her long time
friend/ex-colleague/ex-lover (and also her daughter’s father). Elizabeth swears
that Kessler has no idea he’s the father of her daughter but when the team
tracks him down and shoots Kessler, the girl yells “daddy” and starts shooting.
Very confusing
Jane is able to stop
the 15-year-old who seems to have an endless supply of bullets by talking her
way out of it Jane-style. The team takes her back to her mum and all is well.
Meanwhile Shepherd is
planning something – that much we can tell from the truckload of C4 Roman
delivered to her. Per Roman’s advice, Shepherd tells Jane that she lost her
family (and ovaries) to Lake Aurora and that’s where it really all began – her sociopathic
goal to cleanse the world. Jane looks to be very touched by all this.
Reade who is now on suspension
tracks down Coach Jones who may or may not have abused him, Zapata who can't
seem to keep her nose out of other people’s business kicks out Reade’s house guest
(Freddie) – who was having a little drug fun and pays a visit to SHDWCAT in the
hospital
At the office, Nas is
having drinks with Weller and shows him some footage from her archive that proves that Sandstorm has been
watching Kurt for two decades.
Questions.
- What is Kurt’s role in all these? Could it be that he and not Shepherd is the head behind Sandstorm and his memory was wiped too?
- What does Zapata want with SHDWCAT? Something to do with Coach Jones maybe?
- Is Jane now team Sandstorm?
- Whatever happened to Zapata’s gambling addiction?
The mystery continues
