Fox’s Lethal Weapon is a reboot of the hit movie of the same name. The series follows the story of erratic ex-navy SEAL Martin Riggs (played by Clayne Crawford) who loses his wife and unborn child in a car accident. Riggs, determined to die but not by his hand joins the LAPD and is paired with Roger Murtaugh (played by Damon Wayans) – a middle-aged cop who almost lost his life to a heart attack and is willing to do anything to stay alive.
Side Note: Murtaugh wears a heart monitor watch which goes off the chart several times during the episode – that can’t be good for his health.
The show intends to make the obvious difference in the main characters a reason to watch the show. The focus is barely on the cases the police department is trying to solve but more focused on the personal lives of both partners.
Episode 1 of the show which premiered 21st September doesn’t exactly leave me wanting more. The sub-story of the evasive blowjob was so much more interesting than every other activity that went down in the episode.
Riggs is in the middle of a high chase when he gets a call from his wife who is about to go into labor – and driving herself to the delivery room no less. Riggs decides he can’t waste time chasing criminals so he makes an impossible shot – and hits the target. Looks like we have ourselves a pretty bad ass couple.
However, the impressive couple is short-lived as his wife dies when she is hit by a trailer and Riggs finds out in the hospital when he arrives with a bunch of flowers. What was supposed to become a defining moment for Riggs and a heartbreaking moment for the viewers feels hasty and not very well thought out.
After Riggs joins the LAPD, there is a robbery turn hostage situation at the bank and Riggs casually walks in with pizza like the delivery guy and tries to smooth talk himself. He tells the robbers/kidnappers that they have to kill someone to be taken seriously – he goes ahead to suggest someone white because that gets more coverage. The robber-in-charge decides to shoot Riggs and the latter, pulls a James Bond and kills every thief on scene (isn’t that illegal by the way?). One of the armed robbers was wearing a bomb and he flips the switch with his last breath.
The bank is cleared within 10 seconds – mostly because no one wants to die by bomb. Riggs walks out of the station, pizza in hand and talks to Murtaugh like there’s not a bomb ticking behind him. The bomb goes off and the two are right in the circle of the blast. But somehow, these two come out without a scratch even though we could clearly see shrapnel flying toward their backs.
Murtaugh like any human who loves his life requests to be reassigned to a new partner when he gets to the office but halfway through the conversation, a new case comes in. An ex-navy SEAL has committed what seems like suicide but they later discover isn’t. They chase leads and end up having an encounter with a sniper. Riggs decides that the best way to get out of the picky situation is to get the sniper out of hiding (by sacrificing himself) so Murtaugh can make a shot with the last bullet in his gun. The latter decides to shoot Riggs’ leg so he can get his gun on the floor and shoot the killer – (seems like there’s more killing than arresting. I count 5 dead).
In between all the action in the show, Riggs connects with Murtaugh’s family in a way that’s supposed to tug on our heartstrings.
If this show is like any other story ever written, you know that Riggs is going to unwillingly fall in love (probably with one of his coworkers we were given a peep at in the first 10 minutes of the show). The question is what happens when Riggs finally has something to live for? What then do we have to watch?
Did you see the Pilot of Lethal Weapon, what did you think? Will you be watching the rest of the show?
