Should we be expecting a name change? Jane NOT the Virgin? Passions of Jane?

If you’ve been following the CW show Jane the Virgin, then you know that in the third episode of Season 3 “Chapter 47”, Jane lost her virginity – and I felt nothing. While I appreciate the fact that after three years of Jane being a virgin with a serious boyfriend, a pregnant virgin, a virgin with a hot rich boyfriend, a horny virgin and a virgin mother, the producers finally realized they couldn’t prolong the inevitable forever (unlike a certain show about a 40 year old woman pretending to be 26) but something about what is supposed-to-be- major-arc in the story felt off.

Jane and Michael were supposed to have their big night on their wedding night (Season 2 finale) but that part got prolonged because Michael was shot. Now that Michael is fine and cleared for sex duties, these two finally have sex and it was so ordinary it was disappointing.

What was wrong with it?

Their chemistry seemed way off. This is Jane you know; Jane who had a crumpled flower framed in her bedroom, Jane the romantic writer, Jane the 20something year old virgin; she’s been waiting to lose her virginity forever and seconds before she’s about to, everything just seems so bleh.

We find out that Jane actually faked an orgasm! How terrible do you have to be in bed for a virgin to fake it? She and Michael eventually find their groove but that part was bound to happen – either that or she was going to have forbidden sex with Rafael. Something very Telenovela.

I think the major problem with the Jane and Michael “sex scene” is the fact that it had been drawn out for so long. When you name a show ‘Jane the Virgin”, we expect to be moved when Jane is no longer a virgin. It’s just like all supernatural beings ceasing to exist on Supernatural – that story arc better be epic. But the truth is, the story was never really about Jane and her virginity (or lack thereof). There is so much going on the show – Xo and Rogelio, Alba and her constant judgments, Rafael and his criminal family, Rose and Luisa, Petra and her scheming family – so much so that Jane’s virginity should never have been on the front burner of the show. A sub story maybe but not what the entire show is about.

This is one of those instances when the importance of a show’s name is greatly underestimated. Jane the Virgin creator/showrunner Jennie Snider Urman said in an interview with Deadline that going forward, the title of the show will be changed depending on the story line

Right now I am planning to put a line through it, we will cross it off at the beginning of next episode. Going forward, the title will evolve and be changed to reflect the developments in the particular episode, for instance, Jane, Who Got a Great New Job Opportunity. (Jane will be offered a new job later this season, so her waitressing days may be finally over). The tweak will (illustrate) that the show is much more than a comedy about a virgin, it is a show about Jane’s character and her journey.
