Saviors visit the Hilltop. Carl goes on a solo mission.

This episode kicks off with Maggie in the clinic with Dr. Carson of Hilltop Colony. He tells her that she’s gonna be okay and the baby is fine but she would have to take it easy the next couple of days and stay at the Hilltop for the duration of her pregnancy so he can monitor her health. Maggie tells Sasha what the good doctor said and Sasha thinks they should stay but Maggie wants more time to think about it.

Maggie visits Glenn’s grave and drops her father’s pocket watch (which he gave to Glenn) as marker for his grave. Jesus comes by to drop some flowers followed by Gregory (the leader of the Hilltop who is mad about a lot of things – that Alexandrians didn’t kill all the Saviors like they were supposed to, that Sasha buried the dead instead of burning them and that Maggie and Sasha re still at the Hilltop. He says he would rather have “plausible deniability” when the Saviors come knocking about their dead brothers and sisters. Jesus tries to convince him to let them stay but Gregory only agrees to let them stay the night. Sasha thinks that Gregory is a coward and they should stay anyway but Maggie thinks “cowards are dangerous” and they should think on their decision overnight.

But they don’t get much rest that night as they wake to the loud sound of music, Hilltop gates open and several fires. Sasha goes out to turn off the music but several walkers are already coming through the open gates. Jesus joins in to help discard the walkers and they both try to open the car but its sealed tight. Maggie saves the day by grinding the walkers (and the loud car) to mush with a tractor.

The next morning, Gregory is grateful they helped take care of the situation the night before but he still wants them to leave. Jesus tries to reason with Gregory but the latter has put his foot down and asked if Jesus would like to take his place as leader. Just as they are arguing, Saviors drive through the gates in tens with pervert moustache Simon as their ring leader. Gregory asks Jesus to hide Maggie and Sasha in the closet and he goes to meet Simon.

Turns out Simon isn't aware of Hilltop’s involvement in the massacre of some of the Saviors. He simply came to tell Gregory that he would be their new Negan “because that’s what Negan wants” and to take half of everything they have. He admits to planting the loud car, setting the fires and opening their gates. He says they had done it so they could prove their worth to Hilltop but Hilltop took care of the situation. Before he leaves, he asks if there’s anything Gregory would like to tell him. Gregory; who has succeeded in playing dumb says “actually there is” and takes him to the closet but all that’s there is clothes and a carton of scotch. He offers one to Simon and Simon says he hates it but would take it for Negan. He then takes the entire carton (plus the one Gregory tried to offer him) and asks Gregory to kneel before him – which the latter promptly does. Coward.

Gregory is angry with Jesus for hiding Maggie and Sasha in his room closet rather than the hallway closet. But Jesus counters by saying Gregory only said “closet”. Jesus insists that Maggie and Sasha will stay and tells Gregory that if he doesn’t let them, he will make the deal with Alexandria public. To reiterate, Jesus says “Maggie and Sasha are staying, I’m staying and we are all going to be one big happy dysfunctional family”. When Gregory walks up to Maggie, she punches him in the face for stealing the pocket watch she left on Glenn’s grave (and maybe for trying to sell them out). “This is our home now” she says to Gregory “so you will learn to start to call me by my name – not Martian, not dear, not honey but Maggie”. Gregory doesn’t argue with any of that.

At Alexandria, Rick is going for a supply run so the Saviors are not displeased on their next visit but Carl refuses to go along. “Is this how its gonna be now” Carl asks and Rick says yes. Rick leaves him behind saying “he will come around” to his fellow Alexandrian. Later, Carl finds Enid going over Alexandra’s gates. He asks her what she’s doing and she responds with “I have to find Maggie”. Carl doesn’t try to stop her but says the Hilltop is a long walk. Carl later joins her on her trip and the two have a little playdate. On getting to the Hilltop, Enid gets to the slightly heartbreaking conclusion that Carl didn’t tag along to protect her but to kill Negan.

Jesus later apologizes to Maggie and Sasha for not coming to their aid sooner and promises to make it up to them. When he is alone with Sasha, she says Jesus can make it up by finding where Negan lives but he has to keep it a secret – even from Maggie. Jesus says he can follow one of the trucks going to Negan but is displeased that they have to hide it from Maggie.

Maggie goes to visit Glenn’s grave and finds Enid there. Maggie, Enid and Sasha later have dinner together and Maggie gives Enid Glenn’s pocket watch and repeats Jesus words – she says “we don’t need anything to remember ‘em by. We have us”.

Jesus sneaks into the truck carrying the carton of scotch and there, Carl reveals himself from behind boxes.

Do you think Carl left a note for his father saying “Hey dad, don’t worry about me. Just on my way to kill Negan”. And by the way, who is watching Judith?
