The first episode of the Final Season rolls towards the inevitable – the disappearance of Stiles. And for some reason, no one wanted to scream - even when it was absolutely necessary.
Memory Lost picks up three months after we almost lost Mason to The Beast. Liam and Hayden are on a date – or at least trying to be; Liam’s “new” car has a flat and they have a human jack (Hayden) and no spare. Just when they are starting to make the best of their date, a car drives towards them. The car’s windshield is broken and it looks to be empty – until a scared kid runs out of the car and says “don’t let them take me too”.
Meanwhile, Stiles and Scott are protecting their city from a dangerous man who stole very important stuff. It turns out to be a middle-aged thief who stole helium. Scott thinks it’s a good thing that Beacon Hills doesn’t need them anymore since they will be carting off to college very soon. Ever the dramatic one, Stiles thinks the town will “burn to the ground” without them. Stiles gets a call from his father and is so excited he screams “they need us”.
Sheriff Stilinski has the kid from the car (Alex) in custody but quite conveniently, Alex doesn’t remember anything. Which is why the Sheriff called his supernatural remembrall to dig through the kid’s memory. Scott does just that and discovers that Alex and his parents were attacked on their way back from the movies. His parents were dragged out of the car and Alex was left alone. When Scott comes out of it, he describes the assailant as “a guy on a horse with a gun”. Alex believes that the riders are coming back for him.
Even though the Sheriff thinks the “kidnapping” is a human crime, Stiles is not convinced so he gets Lydia to feel the car for dead people vibes or whatever banshees feel for. Lydia who is tired of Stiles drawing her out of bed almost every week says she feels nothing and Stiles should let it go. Malia who went out sniffing came back to say she also got nothing and the parents may very well be dead. For some reason, Malia decided to shift to human form (a.k.a. get naked) in front of her (maybe) boyfriend and his best friend. Stiles refuses to let his friends non-belief deter him so he keeps staring at the broken windshield until they discover that the color of the broken glass is blue-green. Stiles believes it’s the effect of a ‘magic bullet’.
The next day at school, while the seniors are trying to take their year book photos, Stiles wants to go snooping at Alex’s house. Lydia is “not interested”, Malia has to retake her photos (thanks to Stiles) and Scott can’t afford to miss another class because he missed 38 last semester and would have been kicked out if not for Lydia’s mum.
Liam, Hayden, Mason and Cory are in class with their new Physics teacher Mr Douglas who everyone seems to be swooning over. Mason discovers that phones cant geolocate so they decide to steal Mr Douglas’ compass and surprise surprise, it too is going haywire. Liam and Mason decide to follow the compass.
After school, Scott and Stiles head to Alex’s home and there, they find every room bare – every room except Alex’s. While Stiles is checking out the room, Scott hears a sound and decides to check it out but its only Mason and Liam who were led to the house by the compass. Stiles still back in Alex’s room checks under the bed and sees horse hooves. That freaky appearance is enough to send him bolting out of the room but while he’s catching his breath, one of the cowboy riders appears and points a gun at Stiles and Stiles just stares back. At this point I’m literally yelling at the screen “Scream Stiles, Scream” but he doesn’t scream and the rider just shoots the glass instead. The sound of the shot sends his friends running. By the time they open Alex’s room again, there’s nothing there. Which means Alex is probably next. At this point Team Werewolf + 2 humans figure out that the riders aren’t just taking people but erasing them.
Back at the station, Sheriff Stilinski can’t find Alex and he asks his deputies to find him saying “you don’t lose a child in the Sheriff Station”. Turns out Alex had locked himself in a cell – he believes he’s safer there and asks the Sheriff to allow him stay. The Sheriff obliges and positions a guard in front of the cell. But none of that helps as not long after, one rider is emerging through the wall and Alex just stares in awe rather than scream his lungs out for help. Is there a no scream law in Beacon Hills?
Ever the detective, Stiles is looking up lost people and cities trying to figure out the riders when Lydia starts quoting the song “Riders on the Storm” and they put two and two together – the riders are Ghost Riders on a Wild Hunt – which means they take people and erase their lives. Just like Alex’s parents. Stiles is so excited he says “Lydia you are so smart, I could kiss you right now”. She asks him not to but Stiles gives her a quick one on the cheek and runs off to meet Scott who is going for lacrosse practice which no one told Stiles about. And someone is wearing Stiles’ jersey.
Afterwards. Lydia discovers that anyone who looks upon the riders is lost and she tells Malia that Stiles saw them which means he’s next. But Malia doesn’t know who Stiles is.
Stiles and Scott run to the station to check on Alex but he’s gone and no one remembers a kid in lockup. Sciles think the riders may be after everyone who was on the road with Alex – namely Liam and Hayden so they go back to school to find them. At school, Stiles tries to tell Scott something but Scott says “tell me later” and leaves. Stiles runs into Mrs Martin and asks for his dad but she doesn’t recognize him. He finds Layden and Mason and tries to warn them but they don’t recognize him either. Neither does his dad. Or Scott.
Stiles runs out of school just as Lydia is screaming his name and the Ghost Riders are preparing to take him. Stiles is a little happy to have someone who remembers him and they both try to run from the riders. But instead of starting the car and driving Roscoe out of that place really fast, he says “there’s no time” and decides to savor his last moments with Lydia. He tells her to remember him “remember how you saved my life... remember I love you”. If you listen closely at this scene, you can hear the hearts of Stydia shippers doing back flips. The least Lydia could have done was say “I love you too” – I mean the guy was about to get erased. Anyway, right after he confesses, Stiles is dragged off by one of the riders as Lydia keeps muttering to herself “Remember”.
But that does no good as the next morning, she doesn’t even remember what she’s supposed to remember.
Weirder than Kanimas
Does anyone else think “Mr Douglas” will have a role in all these? Whenever a Beacon Hills teacher gets screen time, he/she is about to be knee deep in supernatural mess.
What about that mysterious lightening that struck Lydia? We’d love to hear your theories
