Wes is still very dead. But thank goodness for flashbacks.

The episode picks off with a scene that either tells the hopeful that Annalise is out of prison, Wes is alive and everything was a bad dream or tells the realist that Wes is very dead and Annalise is reminiscing. The latter turns out to be the case. Annalise is remembering watching Wes play with Meggie in the University Park and Wes refuses to introduce them because it will be “weird”. Going forward, we see lots of Wes flashbacks that sheds light on a side of him we did not know existed – funny, considerate and very sweet. Who knew?

Just in case you were holding out hope that How to Get Away with Murder will be one of those shows that kills people then comes back and says “oh he faked his death”, the show definitely put a lot of nails in that coffin of hope as we see the Medical Examiner performing an autopsy and removing one of his very vital organs. Can’t exactly come back from that. Or can he?

Meanwhile, Annalise is trying to get out on bail and has appointed a very un-confident Bonnie as her attorney because “everyone is a conflict of interest”. Bonnie ends up moving the hearing a day ahead because the ME hadn’t released the autopsy result. While all these is going on, Bonnie is trying to convince Laurel that Frank isn’t responsible for Wes’s death,  she’s lying to Annalise that Frank isn’t in anyway involved with Annalise’ case (which he totally is) while still getting all chummy with Frank. Bonnie may very well be the most manipulative character on this show – lying to those closest to her with her I-will-never-lie-to-you face while sticking a knife in their back in the name of the “greater good”.

Nate takes a page from the Annalise Book.

Nate is under attack at his new job for visiting Annalise in prison after visiting the M.E. Nate gets out of what would have been the end of his job by doing what Annalise would do – telling Atwood’s boss that he’s sleeping with the former and a dismissal will be “sexual harassment”.

Connor the Douche-bag

Asher, Connor and Michaela finally get to see Laurel and Michaela is so caring that I can’t help but be a little thrown off guard. There’s a lot of blame going around – Connor thinks Annalise killed Wes, Michaela thinks it’s the Mahoneys and Asher thinks its Connor. Connor thinks Annalise made Frank kill Wes and Laurel is covering for her baby daddy. When Laurel confesses that the child is Wes’, Connor advices her to abort because “Waitlist is not the kind of father” she wants for her son. That’s when Asher loses it and starts punching Connor video-game style. Michaela later makes Asher feel very bad by calling him an “animal” and insisting he goes home but they later make up (including Connor) and become a happy dysfunctional family once again.

Where is our favorite now-beardless killer?

Frank is using his blood money to bribe another government official. He obtained the station’s call logs and in it finds that Hannah Keating called the station immediately after the fire. Bon Bon happily takes this information to Annalise who informs her that while drunk, miserable and illegally burning documents, she had called Hannah and told her she can come take her parent’s home which may or may not have helped Hannah in destroying Annalise.

The Colliver rollercoaster

As for Oliver, he’s still holding on to what Connor implied concerning the night of the bonfire and the fact that Annalise might be responsible for Wes’s death because she asked him to wipe her phone after the fact. To summarize, Oli is a mess right now, but the only thing he’s sure of is that Connor is his “life” but Connor thinks he deserves someone better. (Anyone else tired of this “I love you” versus “I need some space” merry-go-round between these two)? Connor confesses to Oliver that he feels “nothing” about Wes’ death (which we suspect is a lie as that flashback showed that despite his constant Wes-taunting, he actually liked and confided in him). Oli however is not leaving Connor’s side no matter the confessions and instead chooses to nurse his Asher-inflicted wounds.

Annalise is denied bail

While Connor is probably getting pity-I-want-you-back sex, Michaela is being very supportive with Laurel – telling her she will stand by her no matter the decision; while Asher is at the court for Annalise’ hearing. Despite Bonnie’s hope, the prosecutors refuse to disclose their source but instead move to deny Annalise’ bail by painting a picture where she killed Wes because he was about to sign an immunity deal and narc on Annalise. The prosecutors later read Wes’ autopsy result which states that Wes died from “asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation” even though the M.E. told Nate that Wes had died before the fire.

Bad Oliver

It turns out that Oliver did not delete the content of Annalise phone but simply transferred it and kept it in a locked folder on his laptop. He sends the content of this folder to his flash and transfers the flash into his bag. What will Oli do with this definitely-incriminating content? Go to the cops like Connor suggests or use it as a getaway card for him and Connor?

Frank and Laurel have a conversation

Frank finally visits Laurel and she has no nice thing to say to him. She tells him she loved Wes more than she ever loved him and she wished he had been the one to die in the fire. From the past 9 episodes, we know that Frank is willing to go any length to get approval from his dysfunctional family so it’s not surprising when we see him at the station taking the fall for Wes’ death. And to prove this, we get a flashback of Wes leaving the station only to have Frank drive up next to him and demand he get into the car so they have a “talk”.

After two and half seasons of HTGAWM, we know that a lot can happen from the moment Frank drove up next to him to the moment Wes died.  For all we know, Wes didn’t even go all the way to Annalise's with Frank. So did Frank do it? Unlikely but we’ll have to see.

Who do you think killed Wes?
